FSM software origins – Where the software came from and why

Field Service Management software has been around for a while. It has become a staple in the field service industry. Developers are finding more and more ways to create an even better user experience, so it is sure to stick around. But how did FSM software get its start? And why? Read this blog post to find out.

A new type of software

With already a large number of different types of software aimed at businesses, how did FSM software come about? At the time, CRM andd ERP systems already existed. Why was there a need for FSM software?

While useful tools, with their features still utilized in FSM software, neither CRM or ERP systems had what it takes to run a field service business. The tools in these systems were simply not enough – they could not fully take into account the intricacies of the field service industry. To tend to the needs of these businesses, FSM software was created. This new type of software offered tools to help with dispatching, service agreements, scheduling and more.

FSM software today

The software is comprised of many pieces. Most systems have a specific section for CRM for example, tweaked to fit the needs of the industry. While some pieces have been simply modified from existing ideas, some were also specifically made for FSM software – features others had not even thought of. Now, the software smarter than ever – it utilizes everything from GPS and weather information to automation and artificial intelligence to give its users an advantage.

Still, the software serves the same purpose as it did in the beginning. It was created to make managing (specifically) a field service business easier. It is yet to be seen what the future holds for FSM software. But one thing is sure – it is not going anywhere.
